Chapter nine

Cole

I waved goodbye to the group as I exited the therapy room. Ricardo had one thing right. It was nice to talk to other people who were in similar positions as me.

The past few weeks I’d felt alone, but after this group therapy session, the feeling was passing. I’d talked to a guy who had fallen off a ladder at work and broken his back. And there was another was in a horrific car crash where the paramedics had used the jaws of life to rescue him. Both were also paralyzed from the waist down.

It was too bad that Ricardo was full of crap and intended to murder everyone here. I guess it was true what they say. People do desperate things when they run out of options.

I just wished that there was a real answer to helping these people.

I pressed the button for the doors to open and then squinted against the bright sunlight as I moved out into the gardens. Scarlett and my mother would love the orange flowers growing along the sides of the trail. I should probably call her back. It was wrong not to.

I started to fish my phone out of my back pocket, but noticed Julian was waiting on one of the bamboo benches under a palm tree.

He waved and stood up, strolling toward me. “How was it?”

I shrugged as I looked over my shoulder at the rest of the group filing out. “It was oddly kind of nice.”

Julian lifted a brow. “Emmalyn is still in her session. I think it goes another hour.”

I set my hands in my lap as Julian grasped the chair’s handles and pushed me down the path. “Is she doing better? It looked like she was having a panic attack.”

Julian was silent for a few moments until we were away from everyone else. “I kind of think that she was. I think it has something to do with you being mates.”

I ran a hand through my hair. “I’ve never heard of that happening before.”

Julian made a noise in the back of his throat. “Yeah, but you know the bonds are different. It could just be her trying to protect you.”

My brows pinched together, and I gritted my teeth as I growled out, “I’m supposed to be the one protecting her.”

Julian tapped my shoulder. “I think the goal is to watch out for each other.”

I exhaled through my nose. “Yeah. That’s probably true. Do you think Ricardo suspected anything?”

Julian didn’t answer until we were safely inside the house and he’d shut and locked the door. “I don’t think so, but it’s hard to say. After Johanna and Fredric, he might be on the lookout for other agents, but Emmalyn also came across as a concerned wife, so...”

“I guess we have that going for us,” I said with a sigh. I knew she wanted to get justice for her sister and brother-in-law. It was ironic, she was worried I would be the one to botch the mission with my lack of experience but she was the one who was putting us in jeopardy.
